The more I bake and cook food from scratch, the more I have realized how important it is to have a great apron! I prefer aprons made of 100% linen because they are a lot more absorbent than cotton blends. I buy my linen online but some textile stores also carry really good quality linen.
This is a really simple project for an intermediate seamstress!
- Begin by measuring the width that you’d like. You’ll want to measure yourself at your waist to see how wide you’d like the apron. Multiply this number by 2 to find your width.
- The next measurement to take is your desired length. You’ll need to add an inch to the length to account for the hem.
- Cut out 1 of these pieces.
- For the waistband/straps, you’ll want to cut a strip of fabric 6″ x your desired width multiplied by 3. If you don’t have enough fabric you will want to attach two pieces together right sides together and then iron the seam flat.
- For the pockets, you’ll want to cut out 2 pocket shaped pieces at your desired size – I make sure that mine are about 2x the size of my hand so that they are very comfortable.
- Hem 3 sides of the main apron piece. (fold over 1/2″ and iron, and then fold over another 1/2″ and iron, then sew with a straight stitch)
- On the raw edge of the apron, sew a gather stitch (straight stitch on the longest setting – do NOT backstitch) and gather the top to the desired finished apron width.
- Fold the long edges of the strap in 1/2″ and iron in place. then, pin to the raw edge of the apron as you would bias tape (sandwich the apron in between the hemmed edges of the strap. Be sure to center the strap first!), pin in place.
- Sew a straight stitch down the entire strap, creating the closed strap as well as attaching the waistband portion to the top of the apron at the same time. Use about a 1/4″ seam allowance.
- Fold in the ends of the strap and sew in place with a top stitch or a hidden stitch.
- Hem all sides of the pocket and sew them in place.
Done! I love this apron – it is well worth investing in 100% linen if you want it to last.
